- Abstract:
- Predictions are for species to shift their ranges to keep track of future climate changes. Most supporting evidence for this comes from studies at species' northern boundaries, and evidence that southern boundaries are also sensitive to climate is equivocal. We will analyse existing data sets for British butterflies to investigate 20th century patterns of range contraction at southern range margins in relation to climate, and analyse the effects of climate variability on population dynamics. Using new field data, we will model relationships between current distribution, habitat and climate, and test models with historical climate and distribution data. We will attempt to relate species' thermal ecology to recent distribution changes, and then use our models to predict potential distribution changes under alternative future climate change scenarios.
