Abstract:
The occurrence of emerging infectious diseases represent a substantial global threat to the health of natural populations. Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis has recently been discovered in Europe as the causative agent of amphibian mass mortalities, however the reasons as to why this pathogen is emerging are unclear. Population genetics will be used to determine whether European chytridiomycosis represents a recent introduction from other continents or is rather a change in a pre-existing host-parasite relationship. Surveillance techniques for determining the presence and density of B. dendrobatidis infection will be developed. These techniques, coupled to environmental monitoring, will allow us to define population parameters for use in epidemiological models that will be used to predict the impact and progression of this disease throughout European amphibian populations.
