Abstract:
Water flows in which turbulence is modulated by suspended clay are far more common and dynamically complex than previously assumed. However, there is a general lack of understanding of the fluid and sediment dynamics of these 'transitional' flows, and their expression in the geometrical, structural and textural properties of deposits. We propose a comprehensive experimental laboratory programme to investigate fundamental aspects of transitional flows that are applicable to earth surface studies, engineering and environmental management, and interpretation of the ancient sedimentary record. The project will build upon successful pilot studies with proven, state-of-the art methodologies to quantify the influence of shear rate, yield stress, non-cohesive sand/silt particles and bed roughness on the flow dynamics and deposits of transitional flows.
