Abstract:
This study will investigate how demographic and life history traits influence the kin structure of populations and whether associating with kin confers fitness benefits. The four principal objectives are to: 1. Determine whether kinship influences behavioural interactions in a kin-structured population; 2. Measure the kin structure of two populations with contrasting demography; 3. Determine whether coordinated dispersal of relatives contributes to population kin structure; 4. Determine how life history and demographic traits influence kin structure in avian populations. These aims will be met using population models, comparative analyses, DNA profiles and field and lab studies of a model system, the long-tailed tit Aegithalos caudatus.
