- Abstract:
- This invited resubmission aims to test two hypotheses that have been advanced in recent years to explain the radial expansion at Mt Etna volcano: (1) inflation of a buried magma chamber or (2) volcano spreading. The 2001 flank eruption, the first for 10 years, enabled us to make GPS measurements demonstrating that radial expansion continued during the eruption, as predicted by (2). We need to re-measure the network again after an interval of a year to check that there is no delayed contraction predicted by (1), and to gauge the expected continued radial expansion of the flanks. This will be the first time that this process has been unequivocally indicated anywhere, and as such has important repercussions for the understanding of volcano functioning generally. This application is to cover costs of fieldwork only.
