Abstract:
Rates of ice accumulation in Antarctica are not known well, yet they are fundamental to assessing the ice sheet mass balance. Past accumulation rates are less well defined. We are in a unique position to provide detailed accounts of accumulation in Antarctica. We will measure isochronous internal layering across the ice sheet, which can be readily identified in radar data that we hold. Internal layers will be traced to ice-cores (allowing dating) and across wide regions of the ice sheets. A numerical ice-flow model will assimilate the isochrons, inverting for accumulation. This unique project will determine accumulation rates (1) in the Holocene across the slow flowing interior of both East and West Antarctica and (2) over the last glacial-interglacial cycle in East Antarctica. The results will have significant implications for palaeo and modern climatological research.
