- Abstract:
- The Kyoto Protocol is likely to lead to an assessment of the role of management practices on the sequestration of carbon by forests. Thinning a forest is traditionally done to maximize timber production over the lifetime of the forest but it will produce changes in canopy structure and soil microclimate which in turn will affect trace gases exchange. In this project we shall measure the net ecosystem productivity of the forest as it closes canopy after thinning over the next few years and compare it with forest performance from earlier studies. We will also measure the efflux of CO2, CH4 and N2O from the forest floor as they respond to the initial opening up of the canopy and its subsequent closure. We will close the carbon and water budgets for the forest by extending a network off sap flow, throughfall and stream discharge measurements, including dissolved organic carbon.
