Abstract:
The morphology and systematics of specific families within the cheilostomate Bryozoa have been documented in some detail but the phylogenetic relationships between families is poorly resolved. We propose to investigate phylogenies within the Cheilostomata using a combination of morphological and molecular approaches. This will enable the elucidation of genetic divergences between major cheilostomate family groups, important in the understanding of processes underlying speciation in this diverse and widespread group of organisms. The study will involve the use of five different genes, 18s rRNA and ITS from the nuclear genome, and COl, Cytochrome b and 12s rRNA from the mitochondrial DNA. These genes evolve at different rates, and their use will permit construction of a classification incorporating all major lineages established from the early Cretaceous.
