Abstract:
The proposed research will examine experimentally how familiarity and genetic relatedness between competing individual threespine sticklebacks interact with variations in prey type, abundance and spatial distribution to determine the outcome of competition. Four experiments are planned. The first will examine the effects of prey density, type and depth on competition. The second plans to determine how prior residency interacts with prey distribution and type to determine competitive outcomes whilst the third experiment is planned to look at the way a predation threat changes competitive outcomes. The final experiment will use related and unrelated fish to examine the influence of genetic relatedness and familiarity between group members in determining competitive outcomes. The results will be used to parameterise and test an individual based genetic algorithm model of foraging behaviour.
