- Abstract:
- Sexual reproduction is thought to be a major factor explaining why life comes in discrete packages we call species, but evidence has been sparse. We will investigate the macro-evolutionary consequences of sex in rotifers, famous for including the largest asexual clade of metazoans, the bdelloids. We will combine a detailed survey of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequence diversity of individuals from a range of habitats and global sites with morphometric analyses to compare genetic and functional clustering in representative bdelloid and (sexual) monogonont taxa. The ecological and biogeographic context of sexuality, in terms of endemism, dispersal and habitat specialisation, will be investigated using gene trees and lab/field experiments.
