Abstract:
Sediment tracing techniques have assumed increasing importance as a tool in investigations of the fine sediment dynamics of catchments and river systems. Applications involving the use of 'natural' tracers to document rates and patterns of erosion and soil redistribution on slopes and rates of floodplain accretion and to identify the source of fine sediment in river systems have proved particularly successful. There is, however, an urgent need to refine the methodologies involved, in order to increase their precision and reliability. This project will address a number of generic uncertainties and problems associated with these techniques, related to the initial distribution of fallout radionuclides in soils and sediments and the effects of the grain size and organic matter selectivity of erosion, transport and deposition processes on tracer property concentrations.
