Abstract:
Ediacaran-age fossils occupy a critical ecological and evolutionary position between the terminal Proterozoic glaciations and the Cambrian explosion. We propose to examine the palaeoecology of these organisms over a wide range of scales to resolve their lifestyles, community structure and intra-/interregional variation. The work will be based on three field areas on the East European Craton: the White Sea, Central Urals, and Ukraine which together will allow reconstruction of Ediacaran ecosystems on a scale of cm to 1000 plus minus km. The focus will be on documenting the role of organisms in defining the total environment, and understanding their contribution to evolving ecologies and environments. We will be investigating 'conventional' Ediacaran biotas, as well as organic-walled fossils, within a stratigraphic and sedimentological context.
