Abstract:
This project will provide a tested method for the archaeological identification of ancient agricultural practices through analysis of the functional ecology of the weeds accompanying ancient crop samples. Plant functional attributes will be measured to complete a database for the major archaeologically attested weed species in Europe and the Near East The method, and database, will be used to address two issues of importance for understanding the history of human land use and the development of human societies: the antiquity of irrigation and the balance between intensive and extensive cultivation, These issues will be investigated for two bronze age sites: the catchment area of Tell Brak in Syria, where irrigation agriculture is suspected, and Assiros in Greece, where cultivation with intensive 'horticultural' methods is suggested.
