Abstract:
The mean climate, annual cycle and interannual variability of the Indian Ocean and its influence on the global climate will be studied using various configurations of the Hadley Centre coupled model, particularly the next generation global environment model (HadGEM1) and the ocean eddy-permitting version (HadCEM). A regionally coupled model will be used to isolate modes of variability that are internal to the Indian Ocean and are independent of ENSO, versus those that are forced by ENSO. The degree to which interannual variability in the Indian Ocean is due to changes in windstress (ie dynamical) versus changes in surface fluxes (ie thermodynamical) will be investigated. The influence of the Indian Ocean on the variability and predictability of global climate anomalies will be studied.
