Abstract:
The growth and repeated collapse of lava domes at volcanoes is a source of risk and scientific uncertainty. We propose to reduce that uncertainty by a programme of observation and modelling. A novel millimetre wave radarometer will be built to measure the shape and temperature of a growing lava dome. The data from this new type of instrument will be combined with finite element models of the thermomechanical properties of the dome to estimate the likelihood of collapse. We will undertake this study in collaboration with the Montserrat Volcano Observatory, which has an operational need for such a technique. The technique, however, is generic and the results unique and we will seek to promote use of AVTIS across a number of volcano observatories.
