- Abstract:
- Within the thermocline, the subsurface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) is an important region of new primary production. Growth in the SCM is dependent on the rate of turbulent mixing at the thermocline, supplying nutrients and controlling the algae's position within the irradiance profile. Our understanding of processes within the SCM is limited by a lack of knowledge concerning both the physical mechanisms responsible for this turbulent mixing, and the algae's response to turbulence within the SCM environment. This project will employ a combination of new in situ measurement techniques (turbulence profiling, fast repetition rate fluorometry, and in situ spectrophotometry) to identify turbulent generation and dissipation at the thermocline, and quantify the resulting nutrient assimilation, photoadaptation, and primary production within the SCM.
