Abstract:
This project aims to test two hypotheses that have been advanced in recent years to explain the radial expansion at Mt Etna volcano: (1) inflation of a buried magma chamber or (2) volcano spreading. The present flank eruption, the first for 10 years, provides a window of opportunity to measure the existing ground deformation networks to check whether radial contraction is taking place during the eruption, as predicted by (1), or whether the radial expansion continues, as predicted by (2). If gravitational spreading is indicated, this will be the first time that this process has been unequivocally indicated anywhere, and as such has important repercussions for the understanding of volcano functioning generally. The application is to cover costs of fieldwork during and after the eruption.
