Abstract:
A time-limited opportunity has arisen to investigate sediments in active quarry exposures at Norton Subcourse, Norfolk. Previous work at the site records the Early Pleistocene Westleton Member (Norwich Crag Formation), overlain by glaciogenic sediments of the North Sea Drift Formation (outwash sands, gravels and tills). The new exposures are particularly important as they reveal a 4m thick organic deposit lying between these two formations. This project aims to investigate this succession and establish its age and environment of deposition, through systematic sampling for faunal and floral remains within the organic unit and lithological sampling of the gravel deposits. This presents a timely and rare opportunity to examine inland exposures in Early or early Middle Pleistocene sediments and also to test and refine the stratigraphic scheme for this period.
