- Abstract:
- The Surrey/Birmingham team recently completed a feasibility study ('Enteroviruses in groundwater'), which developed improved sampling methods and used these to establish the presence of enteric viruses in deep boreholes in matrix-dominated UK Triassic sandstone aquifers. The study also demonstrated the accumulation of viruses on inorganic colloids. Little is currently known of the transport, attenuation and survival of viruses in such groundwater systems, hampering attempts to model virus behaviour. This project aims to resolve these unknowns by developing a quantitative description of virus-matrix sorption, virus-colloid interactions and the effects of these on virus transport and infectivity. The study will be lab based, utilising column and microcosm work.
