Abstract:
Measurement of nitrate utilisation (new production) in the oligotrophic ocean is technically difficult because ambient nitrate concentrations are at the limit of current analytical methodologies (approx 5 nmol N I-1). The measurement of new production is also complicated by the activity of nitrifying bacteria, which may oxidise ammonium to nitrate at the same rate as nitrate is taken up by phytoplankton. It is proposed to use high-sensitivity chemical and tracer approaches to quantify new production in oligotrophic waters. This project will also examine the high affinity mechanisms of the microbes which maintain nitrate at these very low concentrations.
