Abstract:
One of the biggest unresolved problems in the field of animal learning and memory is explaining variation in cognitive ability. Recent approaches suggest that an animal's environment and ecology underlie such variation. The proposed research will determine the impact of predation and other ecological variables on cognitive ability in Brachyraphis episopali a tropical fish. Cognitive ability will be quantified and compared between populations living in a series of natural replicate streams with waterfalls separating high and low predation sites. The relative roles of the environment and heritability will be determined by measuring the learning and memory ability of Brachyraphis reared under a number of different conditions.
