Abstract:
Evidence for high species extinction rates emphasises the need to identify priority areas and taxa where conservation action will be most efficient. Most studies use simple counts of species and threats, but extinction is complex and results from interactions between environmental and biological factors, and dynamics that vary with taxon, location and circumstance. We propose to characterise these interactions and to develop predictive models of processes affecting population declines in mammals. Using new compilations of phylogenetic and conservation data we will address the following: 1) what is the balance of human pressures versus biological characteristics in explaining the distribution of threat among mammals?, 2) Do correlates of threat differ among radiating versus declining clades?, 3) where are the global hotspots of threatened phylogenetic diversity?
