Abstract:
Decadal to millennial climate variability in NW Europe is tightly linked with changes in the ocean thermohaline 'conveyor' circulation. Deepwater exiting the Atlantic in the South is replaced by surface returnflow. The Agulhas Current 'leakage' is a key component of this return flow in that it exports Indian Ocean thermocline water to the South Atlantic. We propose to generate palaeoceanographic records at very high temporal resolution (millennial to centennial timescales that will allow a detailed assessment of the changes of heat and salt transports in the Agulhas Current during periods of rapid ocean and climate change over the past 50,000 years. In conjunction with palaeo-modelling, we will further assess the influence of Agulhas leakage, through salinity feedback, on thermohaline overturn in the North Atlantic. This application is accompanied by a NERC seatime application.
