Abstract:
It has been claimed that observed long-term nutrient concentration changes in the Irish Sea are a result of eutrophication. We have compiled and made a preliminary analysis of a nutrient database and uncovered evidence that suggests observed changes may be due to climatic shifts in the water mass boundaries between regions of Atlantic and freshwater influence. We also suspect that summer nutrient concentrations in the shallower parts of the Irish Sea may be climatically driven, owing to changes in sediment resuspension caused by changes in wind/wave stress. The aim of this project is to: i) strengthen our preliminary conclusions by accessing more of the available data and making a more extensive analysis, ii) explore with a physical model and a coupled physical-biogeochemical model the hypothesis that the observed changes could be primarily physical in origin.
