Abstract:
This project will use in situ cosmogenic 10 Be and 26 Al dating methods to constrain the rates of landscape and fault evolution in a part of New Zealand where clear signals in the geomorphology already show the nature of the processes that are operating. A pilot study has demonstrated that these cosmogenic methods will work, and has revealed the potential for studying geomorphic and tectonic processes over at least the last 700 kyr: an unusually long time for such methods because of the unusually low erosion rates. Fault evolution is an important general problem in continental tectonics, but can only be quantitatively investigated where conditions are favourable for dating, as they are in this part of New Zealand.
