Abstract:
This proposal addresses hypotheses concerning the chemical basis of barnacle settlement, both in terms of species specificity and associative settlement. Specifically we aim to determine whether species specificity at settlement reflects differences in the settlement inducing protein complexes (SIPC - the adult chemical cue which induces gregarious settlement) of adult barnacles and whether settlement of barnacles on basibionts is induced by SIPC-like proteins expressed at the settlement surface. A combined molecular, immunological and bioassay approach will be used to characterise SIPCs and SIPC-like proteins, to determine their activity and to localise protein expression.
