Abstract:
The project will investigate the role of mutualism and kin selection in the evolution of specialised co-operative societies. Using our established study population of meerkats, Suricata suricatta, in the southern Kalahari and a combination of field experiments and analysis of long-tern records of the life-histories of individuals, we shall (1) re-assess the costs and benefits of helping, to determine whether the costs are lower and the benefits larger than we have supposed (2) compare the extent to which helping contributes to the direct and indirect components of helper fitness and investigate whether individual differences in investment by helpers are related to the extent to which they are likely to gain direct benefits from helping and (3) examine the factors that cause helpers to reduce their contributions to co-operative activities and the distribution of 'cheating'.
