Abstract:
The spectacular botanical preservation and long occupation of Qasr Ibrim make this site archaeobotanically matchless. 600 samples have been collected over 20 years by the PI and the RR covering the full timespan c. 1000 BC - AD 1800, but particularly focussed on the crucial period AD 100-400, when several new summer crops including sorghum, cotton, lablab and sesame first appear. They are probably associated with new irrigation technology. It has never before been possible to examine this crucial change archaeologically. This project will allow us to test the chronology and nature of the change. This has major implications for the history of agriculture in Africa and the Indian Ocean. A small application to study ancient DNA will follow.
