- Abstract:
- Despite their importance to geochemical models of the evolution of the Earth, the partitioning and transport properties of He and Ne and their relationships to the heavier noble gases are poorly known. The aim of this project is to use a combination of high pressure experiments and laser-ablation mass spectrometry, developed to study crystal-melt partitioning of Ar, to investigate the behaviour of the lighter gases. We will measure the solid-melt partition coefficients of He and Ne under conditions appropriate to mantle melting and the solid diffusion coefficients of He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe. This data will enable constraints to be placed on the storage and recycling of noble gases in the Earth and on the evolution of the U-He isotopic system. These experiments will also characterise the igneous processes which may fractionate He (+Ne) from the heavier noble gases.
