Abstract:
It has long been accepted that individuals should behave more altruistically, and less competitively towards their relatives (kin selection). However, in recent years a large amount of theoretical research has shown that kin selection for altruism towards relatives can be reduced and even totally removed by competition between relatives. Unfortunately, this theoretical work remains untested. We shall: (1) experimentally test the influence of competition between relatives on the evolution of altruism; (2) develop theoretical methodologies that allow the importance of competition between relatives to be determined from observational data; (3) apply these methodologies to existing observational data.
