Abstract:
It is proposed to study the oxidative chemistry of the clean and moderately polluted marine boundary layer, focusing upon unsolved issues from previous campaigns, for example, the origin of discrepancies between observed concentrations of free-radicals and model predictions, details of halogen chemistry and the couplings between HOx, ROx and XOx families, aerosol composition and night time chemistry. The project assembles a UK consortium with a successful field campaign record, and the measurements will include OH, HO2, RO2, IO, BrO and NO3 free-radicals, a comprehensive suite of their sources and sinks, and detailed aerosol parameters, with complete sizing and composition analysis. The experiment will be conducted at Mace Head, Eire, a predominantly clean air site that experiences a wide range of atmospheric conditions.
