Abstract:
Numerical models that try to explain magmatism and tectonism of rifted continental margins have been heavily influenced by margins where the initial seafloor spreading rate was slow (greater than 25 mm/yr half rate). Such models have been devised largely to match observations from just a single margin and not from both sides of a conjugate pair of margins. We shall collect and analyse a comprehensive set of normal incidence and wide-angle seismic profiles to determine the deep structure and rift architecture of a conjugate pair of margins where initial spreading was fast (greater than 50 mm/yr). The results will be compared to numerical models to validate the models and improve our understanding of continental rifting and breakup.
