- Abstract:
- The long-term dynamic behaviour, and response to climate of the East Antarctic ice sheet are poorly constrained. The aim of this project is to test two conflicting hypotheses concerning the dynamic behaviour of the Antarctic ice sheet prior to the Quaternary: (i) that it has remained stable since mid-Miocene time, and (ii) that it was subject to major fluctuations under a much warmer climate until late Pliocene time. The approach taken will involve numerical modelling of the largest drainage basin in Antarctica, coupled to newly acquired offshore and onshore geological and geophysical data, supplemented by geomorphic data to be obtained through a desk study of aerial and ground photography, and satellite imagery.
