- Abstract:
- We propose to study Lake Victoria cichlids to test for parallel evolution of colouration and for parallel speciation. Specifically, we aim to investigate 5 predictions of the hypothesis of parallel sympatric speciation through sexual selection: (1) sympatric forms of Pundamilia spp. that differ in male colour behave as biological species. (2) Female preferences for conspecific males should among nascent species be entirely dependent on male breeding colours. (3) Habitat discontinuities will bar gene flow between allopatric populations leading to geographical population structure. (4) Sister group relationships will be found between sympatric populations of different species that differ in male breeding colour, but in little else. (5) Geographically isolated populations that independently evolved the same male breeding dress will freely interbreed.
