Abstract:
Smooth downstream trends in river slope, hydraulics, bed grain size and ecological habitat attributes are disrupted to greater or lesser degree at tributary junctions and other lateral sediment sources. The degree of disruption depends on the ratios between tributary and mainstem sediment flux, grain size and water flux. We will model these effects for the first time, using enhanced versions of our successful SEDROUT model. Simulations will be done for generic scenarios, including cases of particular management importance (e.g. mainstem river impoundment). Specific field sites, for which adequate data exist or can be obtained, will be used to test qualitative and quantitative model predictions.
