- Abstract:
- This proposal aims to correlate latitudinal adaptation of myosin genes to the genetic diversity of marine amphipod species distributed from eurythermal temperate regimes in the British Isles to cold stenothermal regimes in the Arctic. Species belonging to the genus Gammarus will be sampled at 3 different latitudes (Anglesey, 53 degrees N; Tromso, 70 degrees N; and Svalbard, 80 degrees N): (a) to examine sequence variation in regions of the myosin gene known to characterise muscle function (ATP and actin binding sites); (b) to investigate the extent to which these changes are attributed to phylogenetic relationships, neutral polymorphism or adaptive changes between latitudinal populations; (c) to quantify intra-specific differences in myosin isoform expression in fast and slow muscle fibres with increase in latitude.
