- Abstract:
- Current models of ocean tide loading (OTL) in the British Isles predict up to decimetre-level station displacements, but have only been validated using sparse gravimetric and short-term UPS data. The recent establishment of continuously operating UPS receiver networks allows precise direct measurement of OTL displacements at a well-distributed set of sites. We will quantify OTL displacements for a range of tidal frequencies at each site individually, via a hitherto unused method of incorporating OTL terms directly into UPS positioning. Our improved OTL modelling will constrain inelastic Earth deformation at tidal periods. This has implications for related geophysical processes such as teleseismic wave attenuation and short-term post-seismic relaxation. Also, precise OTL modelling will enable better UPS heighting and estimation of tropospheric water vapour.
