Abstract:
The interactions of trace metals with aquatic colloids are vital in understanding metal speciation and therefore their bioavailability and transport in the environment. This project seeks to develop a novel, non-perturbing methodological approach to the size fractionation and analysis of freshwater colloids and their impact on trace metal behaviour. The overall aim of the project is to provide a greater understanding of the mechanisms of trace metal partitioning, by (a) relating the microscopic analysis of individual colloids and particles to the analysis of macroscopic metal-binding data, and (b) performing surface complexation modelling based on a detailed metal-binding data set.
