Abstract:
Dissolved organic matter (DOM) has a number of important environmental functions (light absorption, binding of protons, metals and organic contaminants, adsorption, aggregation, photochemical reactivity). The use of available laboratory-based information on these properties to interpret and predict field processes is severely hampered by lack of knowledge about the functional variability of DOM. The project aims to (a) develop a mild concentrative isolation procedure for freshwater DOM, and (b) establish and apply a set of assays, in order to determine how different key functions of DOM vary among surface freshwater locations, and in time. In analysing the data, a key issue will be to evaluate the practical consequences of functional variability.
