- Abstract:
- This proposal is aimed at exploiting the unique remote sensed temporal variations from the CHAMP/GRACE missions. In particular we will study high frequency fluctuations in global mass distributions, using the results to quantify, and develop methods to minimise, aliasing, which is expected to be the dominant error source in the production of monthly mass anomaly maps. The study will include development of a barotropic model based on OCCAM, characterisation of the high frequency mass signatures in space and time, retrieval of monthly mass anomaly fields and validation against ground truth. The result will be a validated set of monthly maps and quantification of their reliability, as well as insight into the spatial and temporal variability of mass distributions across the Earth, and the relationship of these mass redistributions to processes in the ocean, hydrosphere and cryosphere.
