Abstract:
The influence of natural organic polymers on the process of sediment erosion (threshold and rate) and sediment floc re-suspension will be investigated for the first time using in-line laser holography (ILH). The three dimensional properties of eroded particles (size distribution and morphology), and their spatial relationships will be determined. Pilot studies have shown that a relationship between applied bed shear stress tau (ocrit), the organic content of the bed and the nature of the eroding flocs can be investigated by capturing holograms of the flow field at the point of incipient erosion. This new combination of ILH and state-of-the-art erosion devices (eg Microcosm, Cohesive Strength Meter) is globally innovative and will provide new understanding and predictive formulations for describing the erosion of natural sediments.
