Abstract:
Palaeoclimatic studies of the last glacial period demonstrate marked millennial-scale climate variability in the North Atlantic region. We intend to produce century-scale resolution records of surface ocean temperature, iceberg discharge activity and global ice volume changes for the penultimate climate cycle in order to address the question of whether this high frequency variability is a pervasive feature of late Quaternary climate. We will work on two cores that (i) have sufficient stratigraphic resolution; (ii) will provide information about the magnitude of climate change and the pattern of ocean heat transport to the high latitudes; and (iii) will reveal the extent of linkages between continental glaciation, ocean circulation and climate change over a range of time scales.
