Abstract:
The project will evaluate the evidence for Mesolithic to initial Neolithic environmental manipulation in a lowland coastal study area in the Welsh Severn Estuary between 6500-3500 Cal BC. Evidence for burning will be evaluated alongside other disturbance factors including storms, floods and faunal agents using multiple sources of palaeoenvironmental evidence (particularly pollen, plant macrofossils and dendrochronology). These data and highly precise timescales of coastal environmental change will enable us to identify the extent to which disturbance is event related, the return period of events, whether disturbances are coeval as between sites and what the implications of these changes may have been for human activity.
