- Abstract:
- Global rates of speciation and extinction are estimated, in a comparison of assemblages of the world-wide distributed genus Cicindela in North America, India and Australia. Species-level phylogenies are the primary basis for these estimates. A novel procedure for primer design of nuclear single copy markers and high-throughput sequencing will be used to firmly establish relationships at different hierarchical levels (subgenus-level, species-level, populations). Lineage-through-time plots and phylogenetic assessments of geographic ranges will be derived from these phylogenies, to estimate diversification and range movements, respectively, at different hierarchical levels and for different geographic regions. Selected clades will be also sampled at the population level, to link inferences from species-level phylogenies and 'phylogeography'. The analyses will test the relative importance of intrinsic (lineage-specific) and extrinsic (environmental) determinants of diversification rates.
