Abstract:
We describe the basis and the evidence for a new approach to dating bone by U-series. Spatial distributions of U and Th isotopes are compared with an explicit geochemical model and used both to reject unsuitable samples and to determine the reliability of measured dates. This project aims to test the method widely on known age material, and by using both 231Pa/235U and 230Th/234U as a concordance check on reliability. Once proven, we will apply it to dating bones from sites selected for their range of environmental conditions and intrinsic importance. We choose 3 classes of site to date: of longstanding importance in the Middle Palaeolithic in Africa and the Near East, of outstanding palaeoenvironmental and palaeontological significance and of immediate relevance to new studies of ancient DNA.
