Abstract:
Current attempts, throughout Europe, to increase biodiversity and environmental quality by restoring lowland rivers and floodplains is based on inadequate data. This project will provide a geomorphological and ecological baseline for floodplain restoration in relation to land use and climate change. The project develops a pilot study (NERC Small Grant) which showed how a multi-channel system in the SW (the Culm) could provide comprehensive data on channel-form, sedimentation, and floodplain ecology over the last 3000 years. This will be exploited by using Coleopteran, macrofossil and pollen analysis a comprehensive dating programme (14C, 210Pb, 137 Cs) and innovative use of OSL. The recent conversion of the Culm to a single channel river (c. 300 bp) has provided 45 km of palaeochannels and a unique opportunity to characterise less-impacted lowland floodplains.
