Abstract:
The history of colonization of the deep sea by irregular echinoids will be documented using a combined morphological and molecular approach. Times of lineage origination will be estimated from the fossil record and checked against molecular data to determine how deep-sea diversity has changed over the past 165 Ma. Deep-sea diversity is predicted to be episodic over geological time, reflecting global changes in oceanographic patterns. The relative importance of these events will be ranked from the effect they had on taxonomic and ecological diversity of deep-sea echinoids.
