- Abstract:
- Individual variation in reproductive success is the basis of selection. In a longitudinal study of individually-recognisable female grey seals, intrinsic characteristics explained only 27% of the variation in individual reproductive performance. Spatial heterogeneity in breeding success, philopatry, site fidelity and kin associations create social structuring within grey seal colonies. We will test the contribution of social context to variation in individual performance, whilst controlling for known intrinsic covariates and potential physical habitat covariates, by analysing existing and new information on our known individuals within an existing fine-scale GIS database.
