Abstract:
The critical N:P ratio marks the transition between N-limitation and P-limitation. This is a key parameter for linking CO2 assimilation to N- and or P-limitation in the sea. We will provide new data on the critical N:P of selected marine phytoplankton and examine the biochemical basis for specific values of the critical N:P. Specific objectives are to determine the carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, protein, RNA, DNA and pigment contents of selected marine phytoplankton in N- and P-limited chemostat cultures. This data will be used to determine the critical N:P and relate the critical N:P to biochemical composition. In addition, we will determine the potential maximum rates of protein synthesis in N-limited cells and RNA synthesis in P-limited cells. The data will be used in the development of a mechanistic model of phytoplankton growth and C:N:P composition.
