Abstract:
The recently proven potential of the U-Pb isotopic method in speleothem carbonates for samples more than half a million years old will be used to address: (i) resolution of the chronology of hominid evolution in southern Africa using samples from key cave fossil sites at Sterkfontein Makapansgat, Swartkrans and Drimolen, (ii) extension of the chronology of Alpine cave deposits beyond the range of U-Th dating to exploit the proxy records of past environments they contain to understand better the patterns of environmental change in a major mountain belt.
